Beware Of Murmuring And Complaining
Memory verse“And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp” (Numbers 11:1).
Human wants are insatiable. But when we don’t even get the things we truly need, frustration can set in. In that instance, there is a tendency to want to grumble, murmur or complain. But such an attitude is dangerous, especially for the Christian.
Complaining and murmuring are things that utterly displease the Lord. When the Christian grumbles and complain before the Lord, he is giving a signal that God has been negligent in His obligation to care for him. Murmuring portrays God as an irresponsible Father who is not mindful of the plight of His children. The truth is that God cares, even when it does not appear to be so.
In today’s text, when the Lord heard the people complaining, He did not even bother to check if their complaints were legitimate or not before punishing them. It is because all complaints are deemed illegitimate before God and therefore, totally unwarranted and justifiably punishable.
The story of the Israelites was written that we might learn from their example and not murmur as some of them murmured and were destroyed (1 Corinthians 10:10-11). We should rather follow the examples of those who trusted and praised God in the midst of their troubles instead of murmuring and complaining.
Beloved, when God is involved in your life, learn to give thanks in all circumstances, trusting in His love and His ability to bring His good will to pass in your life (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Everything will be fine.
